Our Creative Process
Our simple process we call “the 7 D’s” allows us to lead creative projects from start to finish.
We begin with Discovery to understand our client, their business, their customers, and the value proposition to the customer. Next, we Digest what we’ve discovered to help us come to Decisions in step three. Decisions involve our client, and allow us to provide clear direction to our creative team as they begin the Design phase of the project. Design is just that — concepts and idea generation — taking into account all that we’ve learned in the steps before.
Upon completion of the Design phase and client approval, we’ll begin Development. For websites, this will mean implementing the agreed upon designs in a staging server environment to allow our agency and the client to review work and make changes without affecting the live site. After development work is complete and client approved, the agency will Deploy the project.
The final stage of a project is a client Debrief where we’ll review the prior steps, ensure the deployment was successful, and provide any agreed upon reporting.

We are a full-service marketing agency, with roots dating back to 1987. We offer the full range of services you’d expect from a traditional creative agency, and have established relationships with multiple partners for production.
How we work
We’re often referred to as an “outsourced, in-house marketing department” or a “contract CMO.” We’re best known for developing a deep familiarity with our clients and their respective industries.
We are highly responsive, with a team working weekdays from 8:30am – 5:00pm Pacific.
At large, we typically partner through retainer-based work, equity arrangements or work-for-hire projects.
Who we work with
Generally speaking, we tend to work with clients who:
- have a wide array of marketing platforms requiring cohesion
- have a lack of internal resources to properly execute on all fronts
- participate in industry media and trade shows
- have a dedicated budget for marketing activities
While we have clients of all shapes and sizes, over time we’ve developed a knack for working with companies in the following verticals:
- Product Manufacturers. Those selling to dealers, distributors, or direct to an OEM.
- Financial Service Companies. Banks, credit unions, captive financiers, and mobile payment providers.
- Startups. We’ve helped a growing list of startups through multiple rounds of growth, funding and acquisition.
- Commercial Vehicles. Our commercial vehicle (trucking) experience is second to none, with clients that span all three categories mentioned above.

Fun facts
- Rains Birchard Marketing was established in 2010 when Jon Rains and Matthew Birchard assumed ownership of Rains Marketing, LLC, formerly owned by Jon’s father, Gary Rains. Jon started working for the agency in 1992 and helped transition the agency into the digital age by creating its first websites. Matt was hired in 2002 as an Account Manager, and eventually assumed the role of General Manager.
- The Rains Birchard team operated out of an office in the heart of Portland, Oregon for about decade before transitioning the business to fully remote in 2018. Ahead of the curve, one might say.
